ARCHERY COACHING WORKSHOPS
Below are additional details on the various NCCP Workshops.
Pre-Requisites: Starting on May 1st 2022 all individuals will be required to take “Making Ethical Decisions” online found at Alberta Sport in advance of their workshops. This material was previously included in the Instructor Beginner material has now been removed due to the online availability to make additional room available for sport technical information.
Beginning April 1, 2023, all Archery Alberta Coaches will be required to take Safe Sport training and have completion no later than September 1, 2023. After September 1, 2023, coaches without “SAFE SPORT” certification or completion will not be permitted on the field of play. This is to follow the National level requirements as put in place by Archery Canada.
Archery Alberta is pleased to announce a new cost scale for coaching certification in Alberta and beyond. All Level 1 (beginner) and Level 2 (Intermediate) courses will cost:
- $150 for a registered Archery Alberta/Archery Canada member
- $200 for a non-registered member or for an individual who takes the course from Out of Province
Only registered Archery Alberta members will be reimbursed 100% for completion of the course. Non-registered members or out of province are only eligible for a 65% reimbursement ($100 out of $150) for the cost of completion and must be completed by the province registered.
** COACHING STREAM UPDATE **
Changes to Level 2 Intermediate Course
In the coming months Archery Canada will be releasing the newly updated stream for coaches which will combine the Level 2 Intermediate course with Competition Development Introduction into a new 1 tiers stream. This new program will be rolled out by Archery Canada when available.
GETTING A NCCP NUMBER
Any member of the public can get a NCCP Number and take courses. There is a benefit however, to taking additional courses after you’re certified within a specific sport as these courses will credit towards your ongoing Professional Development Credits.

MAKING ETHICAL DECISIONS (MED) via Alberta Sport
By successfully completing the NCCP Make Ethical Decisions training, coaches will be fully equipped to handle ethical situations with confidence and surety. The training helps coaches identify the legal, ethical, and moral implications of difficult situations that present themselves in the world of team and individual sport.
Upon completing the NCCP Make Ethical Decisions training, coaches will be able to:
- analyze a challenging situation and determine if it has moral, legal or ethical implications; and
- apply the NCCP Ethical Decision-Making Model to properly respond to situations in a way that is consistent with the NCCP Code of Ethics.

Pre-Requisite: None, however you will need an NCCP # (instructions above) to enroll.
Time Commitment: 3.5 to 4 hours for Online Training, plus approx. 1 hour for the Online Evaluation.
Cost: $45 for online training, Coordinated by Alberta Sport Connection in Alberta.
Please keep your receipts from the MED Course. For those individuals that Certify after an archery specific workshop (Instructor Beginner/Intermediate, Competition Stream) Archery Alberta will reimburse the cost of the MED course. A Locker Public Transcript check will be required prior to reimbursement.
ARCHERY FOUNDATIONS– CERTIFICATION
Similar to the Level 1 (Instructor of Beginners), this type of instructor teaches basic skills to individuals with very little or no experience in the sport or the activity. They deal with a limited number of participants at a time and focuses on the fundamentals of the activity with an emphasis on safety.
Archery Alberta in partnership with Archery Canada is pleased to announce the upcoming new development stream for new “Non-Competitive” coaching with the new ARCHERY FOUNDATIONS program being developed through Archery Canada. The new ARCHERY FOUNDATIONS program is designed to introduce individuals who work for summer camps, short term archery events (non-competition), Guides, schools, communities and additional programs to learn the absolute basics of coaching and other areas where archery is being taught on a non-competitive level and is available to youth over the age of 14 to 16 years. This new stream will be accessible via the NCCP and will have a lower cost for completion. Those who complete the new Archery Foundations program will have a better understanding of what it means to coach and teach new individuals in the sport of Archery.
This is a “Non-competition” instructor’s course. This course is a 1 day in person course.
Pre-Requisite:
- In Person or Onsite is available
- Can be taken online for “very remote” individuals only
- Archery Alberta Membership is preferred but not required.
Time Commitment: This course is done over a 4 hour period in an online environment.
Cost: $15 for Archery Alberta Members or $45 for Non-Members and out of province
Note: Additional costs will vary for in-person workshops only.
Note: This certification does not permit access to competition field of play.
JUNIOR COACHING PROGRAM
Junior “Coach in Training” Program: Archery Alberta is developing a Junior “Coach in Training” program for those over 14 and under 16 years of age to introduce them to the coaching stream of archery development. This program is intended to introduce prospective youth into the world of coaching and will gear the program to learning how to coach, professional etiquette, interpersonal skills, Safe Sport and the dynamics of what it means to be a coach. If you are an individual who is under 16 years of age but over 14 years of age and are looking to begin your training into the coaching development stream of archery we require all participants to fill out and sign the “Parental Consent for Coaching Clinics” form from our website. Those interested in obtaining education and introduction to our Archery “Coach-in-training” program will need to submit a request to the Coaching Chair at [email protected]. The process for the program follows the guidelines as followed in the NCCP Underage Policy for certification.
Disclaimer: Those who participate must understand that taking these courses does not qualify those between ages 14-16 as a coach nor will they be classified as a coach. All Junior coaches will be under the new “Archery Foundations” curriculum and will be noted on their NCCP transcript.
INSTRUCTOR BEGINNER – CERTIFICATION
This type of instructor teaches basic skills to individuals with very little or no experience in the sport or the activity. They deal with a limited number of participants at a time and focuses on the fundamentals of the activity with an emphasis on safety.
By presenting several mini-lessons and demonstrations, as well as observing interventions during shooting throughout the course of this workshop, coaches/instructors will be prepared to introduce archery to athletes in a variety of settings, including clubs, camps, schools, and other organized activities.
Pre-Requisite:
- Starting on May 1st 2022, Making Ethical Decisions (previously described above) must be completed separately
- be a member of Archery Alberta & Archery Canada
- MUST be 16 years of age for “Certification”*
- If you are from “Out of Province”, you must request permission from your PSO to take the online delivery portion of the certification
Time Commitment: Couple evenings prior to workshop to prepare Mini Presentation(s) and answer case studies, then the weekend workshop (~8 hours Saturday), with 1 Year to complete Portfolio after Workshop to Certify (can be completed in a weekend).
There are 2 methods for deliverance of the course, Online, and In-Person. For in-person workshops please contact the Coaching Coordinator for more information on additional costs.
Cost: $100 for Archery Alberta Members or $150 for Non-Members and out of province
Once completed, the cost of the course will be reimbursed for Archery Alberta Members only. Non-registered members or out of province are only eligible for a 65% reimbursement ($100 out of $150)
*Note: For all underage participants, all minors will require a parent to complete the Parental Consent Form and have it emailed to the Coaching Coordinator no later than 24 hours before the course. Please note that they will not be considered a “Coach” until the age of 16 and after completing the required requisites list above.
INSTRUCTOR INTERMEDIATE – CERTIFICATION
This type of instructor helps participants refine basic skills and introduces a variety of more complex techniques to individuals who already have some experience in the sport and who already exhibit a fair degree of proficiency in the activity. He/she provides more “customized” instruction based on the individual performance characteristics of each participant and would be expected to manage bigger groups. An instructor working with intermediate archers is expected to be moderately knowledgeable in all matters related to the selection and adjustment of equipment. He/she may also act in a supervisory capacity for coaches working with beginners.
There are no archery specific pre-requisites for this course, but it is highly encouraged that individuals have taken the Instructor Beginner workshop or have several years in the sport.

- If you are from “Out of Province”, you must request permission from your PSO to take the online delivery portion of the certification
- Completion of Instructor of Beginners (Must be certified in Level 1)
Time Commitment: Couple evenings prior to workshop to prepare Mini Presentation(s) and answer case studies, then the weekend workshop (~8 hours Saturday & Sunday), with 1 Year to complete Portfolio and On-site or Video Evaluation with Coach Evaluator after Workshop to Certify.

COMPETITION STREAM (INTRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT)
Tailored for coaches that wish to work with athletes of all ages who have an interest in advancing to competition, this workshop will introduce them to coach education as well as equipment and training issues. They will learn to plan a practice, analyze performance, prepare their athletes for competition, develop practice plans, and promote athlete development.
This type of coach will further refine skills/tactics and work to prepare athletes for lower to national level competitions. These coaches work more with one-on-one athlete plans and would train athletes on a seasonal basis to improve their general fitness level while still remembering that fun is a part of the athletes’ sport experience.
It is highly encouraged that the individuals have taken the Instructor Intermediate workshop or have several years in the sport or a bow shop environment for technical skills prior to going directly into the Competition Stream.
Pre-Requisites:
There are Six (6) NCCP Multi-Sport Modules that are pre-requisites for this Stream. They are offered through Alberta Sport Connection within the Province via the NCCP Workshop Calendar.

For Archery Alberta CompDev: Must be certified in both Level 1 (Beginners) and Level 2 (Intermediate) and also be a Member of Archery Alberta.
For out of Province: Must provide a letter from your provincial PSO requiring permission to take the Alberta Competition Development Courses.
Time Commitment: Excluding the pre-requisite courses, approximately 1.5-2 Years. Competition Development has 2 weekend workshops that are scheduled one (1) year apart, and subsequent portfolio requirements to Certify.
Cost: Varies, estimate $2500.00 for pre-requisites, workshops, and out-of-province travel expenses. Depending on the year and number of interested coaches there is funding available from Archery Alberta budgets & grants to assist coaches with these costs; contact the Coaching Coordinator for more information.
