ARCHERY ALBERTA – COACHING WORKSHOPS
Welcome to Archery Alberta’s Coaching Workshops and Development portal.
Archery Alberta, in partnership with Archery Canada, is dedicated to providing comprehensive and structured coaching certification programs that adhere to the standards set by the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Our courses are designed for a variety of coaching levels and specializations.
Mandatory Courses for All Coaches
- Making Ethical Decisions (MED): Available online through Alberta Sport. Must be completed prior to any certification workshops.
- Safe Sport Training: Required for all coaches by September 1, 2023. Ensures a safe environment for all participants.
- Understanding Rule of Two: for working safely with minors and accountability with athletes.
- [acknowledgement of the] Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS).

Individuals with little to no experience in the sport or activity. These coaches typically work with a small group of participants at a time, emphasizing safety and fundamental techniques.
Archery Alberta, in partnership with Archery Canada, is excited to introduce a new development stream for non-competitive coaching through the upcoming Community Coaching Workshops. This new initiative is designed for individuals involved in summer camps, short-term archery events (non-competitive), Guides, schools, community programs, and other recreational settings where archery is taught at a grassroots level.
The Community Coaching Workshop aims to provide a solid foundation in coaching basics for those working in non-competitive environments and will be open to youth aged 14 to 16 and up. Offered through the NCCP system, this accessible and affordable workshop will help participants gain valuable coaching insight, build confidence in teaching archery fundamentals, and foster a safe, inclusive introduction to the sport.
By completing the Community Coaching Workshop, participants will develop a strong understanding of how to effectively support and teach new archers, nurturing the next generation of archery enthusiasts in a positive and encouraging environment.
This is a “Non-competition” instructor’s course. This course is a 1 day in person course.

- In Person or Onsite is available (Not available for remote instruction)
- Archery Alberta Membership is required

2. Instructor Certification
- Instructor of Beginners: Focuses on teaching basic skills to new archers, emphasizing safety and fun. This course is available as a one-day, in-person, online, or home-study course. Home-study and online options offer flexibility for remote learners.
- Coaching Certification for Registered Club Coaches
- Coaching Certification for Ground Base Coaching (Mounted Archery)
- Coaching Certification for Sanction Archery Alberta Club Events and Tournaments
- Instructor of Intermediate: Builds on basic skills, introducing more advanced techniques for archers with some experience. This is a two-day, in-person course designed to enhance coaching skills for managing larger groups and refining techniques.
- Coaching Certification for Alberta Winter Games Head Coach Zone Coaching
- Coaching Certification for Sanctioned Provincial Tournaments
- Coaching Certification for Min. Requirement and Prerequisite for Competition Coaching
Instructor Beginner – Certification
This entry-level certification equips coaches to teach fundamental archery skills in a variety of settings. Coaches will engage in practical demonstrations and gain essential knowledge in safety and basic technique.
Pre-Requisites:
- Must complete MED (Making Ethical Decisions), Respect in Sport, Safe Sport Training prior to course enrolment.
- Must be a registered member of Archery Alberta and Archery Canada.
- Minimum age of 16 years required.
- Homestudy, online, or in-person delivery options available.
Portfolio Completion: Must be completed within 6 months from the course end date.
Instructor Intermediate – Certification
This certification is designed for coaches who want to enhance their coaching skills for intermediate archers, focusing on customized instruction and equipment management.
Pre-Requisites:
- Successful completion of the Instructor Beginner certification.
- Must be a member of Archery Alberta and Archery Canada.
- Minimum age of 18 years required.
- Available only through in-person delivery.
Portfolio Completion: Must be completed within 12 months, including an on-site or video evaluation.

All out-of-province individuals must provide a letter from their Provincial Sports Organization (PSO) for approval to attend courses in another province. No exceptions.
3. Competition Development
Overview The Competition Stream is designed for coaches dedicated to advancing athletes to competitive levels, ranging from local tournaments to national championships. This stream focuses on enhancing coaching skills necessary for athlete development, performance analysis, and competition preparation. Beginner coaches work with groups while Competition coaches can refine a single athlete.
Course Objective & Multi-sport Modules
- Psychology of Performance: Understand the psychological factors that influence athlete performance and how to enhance mental toughness.
- Managing Conflict: Learn strategies to resolve conflicts effectively within a team setting.
- Developing a Sport Program: Gain insights into building a comprehensive sport program that supports long-term athlete development.
- Nutrition: Equip yourself with knowledge on how to improve athlete performance and recovery through tailored nutritional strategies.
- Advanced Practice Planning: Develop sophisticated practice plans that cater to the specific needs of competitive athletes.
- Prevention and Recovery: Understand the best practices in injury prevention and recovery to maintain athlete health and performance.
- Performance Planning: Learn how to create and execute detailed performance plans that align with athletes’ competition goals.
Pre-Requisites
- Completion of Instructor Intermediate Certification: Coaches must have completed this level or have equivalent years of experience in the sport.
- NCCP Multi-Sport Modules: Six essential modules must be completed:
- Coaching and Leading Effectively
- Managing Conflict
- Leading Drug-Free Sport
- Psychology of Performance
- Developing Athletic Abilities
- Prevention and Recovery
- Membership: Must be an Archery Alberta member in good standing.
- PSO Approval: Out-of-province coaches need approval from their Provincial Sports Organization.
Certification Process
- Duration: The pathway to certification spans approximately 1.5 to 2 years, including all prerequisites and course work.
- Workshops: Includes two weekend workshops scheduled schedule 6 months to one year apart, which are essential for hands-on learning and practical application of skills.
- Portfolio Requirements: Coaches must complete a detailed portfolio showcasing their development and competencies in coaching competitive archers.

Note for Members: Reimbursements and financial assistance are available exclusively for Archery Alberta members. Out-of-province participants must ensure all financial obligations are met independently unless specified otherwise.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
1. Junior Coaching Program
Junior “Coach in Training” Program (JCIT)
Overview The Alberta Junior “Coach in Training” Program (JCIT) was a program initiated to provide youth a cornerstone and footstep into the world of coaching. Due to recent changes, this program has now been discontinued and will be merged into the mainstream “Community Coaching Certification” pathway. As this program is geared toward the same quality of coach education as community coaches, the Junior coach program will provide new coaches in training an opportunity to become better in the sport.
Program Details
- Eligibility: Open to youth aged 14 to 16.
- Course Requirements: JCIT participants undertake the same curriculum as the Instructor of Beginners Certification. This comprehensive training encompasses the basics of archery coaching, including professional etiquette, interpersonal skills, and an understanding of Safe Sport principles.
- Mentorship: Each JCIT participant must have a mentor who is a certified coach from their club. This mentorship is crucial for providing direct guidance and feedback throughout the training process.
- Evaluation and Portfolio Submission: Mentors evaluate JCIT participants based on their performance and adherence to coaching standards. While participants can prepare their portfolios during their training, formal submission is allowed only when they reach the age of 16 and meet the same certification requirements as Beginner coaches.

- Parental Consent: All participants must fill out and sign the “Parental Consent for Coaching Clinics” form available on our website.
- Registration: Interested youth should contact the Coaching Chair at [email protected] to express their interest and begin the registration process.
- Compliance: The JCIT program adheres to the NCCP Underage Policy for certification, ensuring a safe and structured learning environment.

2. Alberta Mentorship Program
Empowering Coaches through Expert Guidance
- The Alberta Mentorship Program is designed to foster the growth of archery coaches across Alberta by connecting novice coaches with experienced mentors in the field. This program aims to enhance coaching skills, broaden knowledge, and strengthen professional networks within the archery community.
Program Highlights:
- Personalized Mentorship: Each participant is paired with a seasoned coach who provides personalized guidance, shares valuable insights, and supports the mentee’s professional development.
- Skill Enhancement: Mentees receive hands-on training and advice on various coaching techniques, problem-solving, and athlete management, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle diverse coaching situations.
- Networking Opportunities: Participants gain access to a wider community of archery professionals, enhancing their connections and opportunities within the sport.
- Who Should Join? This program is ideal for newly certified coaches or those in the early stages of their coaching careers who are looking to expand their coaching abilities and make a lasting impact in the archery community. In addition this program is great for Community Sport instructors and programs.

3. Pathways and the NCCP
NCCP Coaching Pathways Overview
- Archery Alberta is committed to providing a structured and comprehensive approach to coach development through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Our programs are designed to cater to different coaching aspirations and levels of expertise across three distinct pathways: Community Sport, Instruction, and Competition.
1. Community Coaching
- The Community Sport Pathway is designed for coaches who wish to work in a non-competitive, community-based sports environment. This pathway focuses on fundamental sports skills and basic coaching knowledge that are ideal for coaches who are introducing sport to participants of all ages.
- Community Sport – Initiation: Coaches at this level are considered ‘Trained’ and they focus on introducing the basics of archery in a fun and safe manner. This is suited for coaches working with recreational participants and emphasizes participant enjoyment and basic skill acquisition.
2. Instruction Pathway
- The Instruction Pathway is tailored for those who aim to provide more structured coaching in a variety of settings. This pathway develops more advanced coaching skills and is suited for those who are or wish to become Coaching Developers, including Learning Facilitators, Evaluators, and Master Coach Developers.
- Instructor – Beginner: Focuses on coaching beginners in the sport, including teaching basic techniques and ensuring safe participation.
- Instructor – Intermediate: Builds on the foundation skills taught at the beginner level, introducing more advanced techniques and coaching methods.
- Instructor – Advanced: At this level, coaches are prepared to handle advanced techniques and to mentor other coaches as Learning Facilitators or Evaluators, contributing to the development of the coaching community.
3. Competition Pathway
The Competition Pathway is designed for coaches who aim to guide athletes in competitive settings, from local and regional competitions to national and international events. This pathway emphasizes performance improvement, athlete development, and high-level competition strategies.
- Competition – Introduction: Coaches learn to prepare athletes for local and regional competitions, focusing on skill enhancement, basic competition preparation, and strategy.
- Competition – Development: This level is suitable for coaches who are preparing athletes for higher levels of competition. It includes advanced coaching techniques, detailed performance analysis, and long-term athlete development strategies.
- Competition – High Performance: Aimed at coaches who work with elite athletes competing at national and international levels, focusing on high-performance training, psychological preparation, and advanced competition strategies.
